Unfortunately, the Musashi of legends turns out to be much punier and feeble looking than the habitants of the castle would've liked. You'll begin your adventure in Allucaneet Kingdom after being summoned by the nosy princess to defend her land against the evil Thirstquencher Empire. It's a very light-hearted and fun game, with just the right dose of challenge and quirkiness to appeal to almost every type of gamer. Actually, BFM is much more of an RPG than Zelda really is, and isn't advantageously compared to Nintendo's greatest adventure game. Overall, if you enjoy action RPGs (sort of like Crisis Core for the PSP) then you'll definitely enjoy this game. You also level up in the game in 4 different categories and leveling them up will give you perks when it comes to puzzles that you encounter.
While that may sound complicated, it's just one of those things where you keep him stocked up and you'll have no problems. The game also has a daytime nighttime scheme going, and you have to keep Musashi fed and also let him sleep or else you'll start noticing him moving around sluggishly and whatnot. While it can get annoying at times to find the enemy and then walk back to where you need to be, it also forces you to think and gives the game it's puzzle qualities. To get through certain areas, you have to absorb the enemy abilities around you. That's what makes this game different from it's predecessors. The gameplay has a concept with two swords and the big one is where you dish your damage out of but with the little one, you can absorb enemy abilities. If you ask RPG gamers what games they remember from the PS1, this would definitely be one of them. Not that I'm an avid game collector, but this title is one of those few games that Square-Enix put on the PS1 that left it's mark. I had played through the first 2 chapters in the Japanese version (only reason I stopped at 2 was because I couldn't read japanese and didn't know what the next objective was), and I had always wanted to finish the game. No matter what you're doing, it ties into the storyline. In one chapter, you'll have to save a certain number of townsfolk and in the next you may have to search out an item. The story unfolds over 6 chapters, each with a unique boss and set of linear objectives to conquer and complete. Musashi can also increase hit and spell points the more his experience goes up. You can assimilate one skill at a time, which adds a layer of puzzle solving and logic to the mix. For example, if you see a hopping flower and try and assimilate it, Musashi will be able to hop across objects he could normally not pass. You can either slash them to pieces with your trusty swords or you can assimilate their special abilities. When you come across enemies, you have a few options to choose.
Much like the Legend of Zelda series, the action unfolds in real-time. Usually, characters will give you hints as to what you're supposed to be doing or offer you a quest.
